AVI
AVI video
AVI is Microsoft's video container from the 1990s. Camcorders, older cameras and archives still hold AVI files, which are often large and poorly supported on phones.
Extensions: .avi .divx
Convert AVI files to MP4 on Windows 10 and 11: free, offline and in batches. Drag the files onto MP4 in Filee's format donut and the MP4 files appear next to the originals.
In File Explorer or on the desktop, select one AVI file or as many as you like. The first time, Filee offers to download FFmpeg, the free engine it uses for this conversion.
Hold Ctrl (or the key you set in Filee) and drag the files. A donut of formats opens at the cursor. Prefer menus? Right-click and choose Convert with Filee.
Release the files over MP4. A progress ring counts up, and each MP4 file is saved next to its original.
AVI files from old camcorders and cameras are large and often use codecs that phones and TVs no longer play. An MP4 with modern compression is usually much smaller and plays everywhere.

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is the most compatible video format. It plays on phones, TVs, browsers and every video site, usually with H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio.
