MKV
Matroska video
MKV (Matroska) is a flexible open container that can hold many video, audio and subtitle tracks. It is popular for films and recordings, but phones, TVs and editors don't always play it.
Extensions: .mkv
Convert MKV files to SRT on Windows 10 and 11: free, offline and in batches. Drag the files onto SRT in Filee's format donut and the SRT files appear next to the originals.
In File Explorer or on the desktop, select one MKV file or as many as you like. The first time, Filee offers to download FFmpeg, the free engine it uses for this conversion.
Hold Ctrl (or the key you set in Filee) and drag the files. A donut of formats opens at the cursor. Prefer menus? Right-click and choose Convert with Filee.
Release the files over SRT. A progress ring counts up, and each SRT file is saved next to its original.
Take the subtitles out of a film to edit or translate them. The first text subtitle track is saved as SRT; picture-based subtitles (DVD, Blu-ray) can't be turned into text. Needs the free FFmpeg engine.

SubRip subtitles
SRT (SubRip) is the most common subtitle file: numbered cues with start and end times and plain text. Nearly every player, editor and video site accepts it.
