SAMI
SAMI subtitles (SMI)
SAMI (.smi) is Microsoft's HTML-like subtitle format. It is still the classic subtitle file in Korea, often saved in the old CP949 encoding that newer players show as broken text.
Extensions: .smi .sami
Convert SAMI files to SRT on Windows 10 and 11: free, offline and in batches. Drag the files onto SRT in Filee's format donut and the SRT files appear next to the originals.
In File Explorer or on the desktop, select one SAMI file or as many as you like.
Hold Ctrl (or the key you set in Filee) and drag the files. A donut of formats opens at the cursor. Prefer menus? Right-click and choose Convert with Filee.
Release the files over SRT. A progress ring counts up, and each SRT file is saved next to its original.
Many players, TVs and editors don't read SMI, and old Korean SMI files often show as broken text. Filee detects CP949, picks the language with the most lines and saves a clean UTF-8 SRT.

SubRip subtitles
SRT (SubRip) is the most common subtitle file: numbered cues with start and end times and plain text. Nearly every player, editor and video site accepts it.
