JPEG is the most widely used photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, but every save at lower quality discards some detail, and it has no transparency.

Convert JPG files to HEIC on Windows 10 and 11: free, offline and in batches. Drag the files onto HEIC in Filee's format donut and the HEIC files appear next to the originals.
In File Explorer or on the desktop, select one JPG file or as many as you like. The first time, Filee offers to download FFmpeg, the free engine it uses for this conversion.
Hold Ctrl (or the key you set in Filee) and drag the files. A donut of formats opens at the cursor. Prefer menus? Right-click and choose Convert with Filee.
Release the files over HEIC. A progress ring counts up, and each HEIC file is saved next to its original.
HEIC keeps a photo in about half the space of a JPG at the same quality, the way iPhones save photos. Saving HEIC needs the free FFmpeg engine (about 100 MB, downloaded once in the app). EXIF, the colour profile and the orientation are kept.

HEIC / HEIF image
HEIC (HEIF) is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default. Photos are often about half the size of a JPG, but many Windows apps, websites and older devices can't open them.

Filee is a free, open-source file converter for Windows 10 and 11. It works offline and converts 180+ formats with one drag and drop.
Windows is the stable release. macOS and Linux are previews: the macOS app isn't notarized yet (allow it once under Privacy & Security), and on Linux the drag gesture needs an X11 session. The examples and screenshots show Windows.
