NEF
Nikon NEF RAW photo
NEF is Nikon's RAW photo format, used by Nikon DSLRs and Z mirrorless cameras. Like other RAW files it holds unprocessed sensor data and is several times larger than a JPG.

Convert NEF files to JPG on Windows 10 and 11: free, offline and in batches. Drag the files onto JPG in Filee's format donut and the JPG files appear next to the originals.
In File Explorer or on the desktop, select one NEF file or as many as you like.
Hold Ctrl (or the key you set in Filee) and drag the files. A donut of formats opens at the cursor. Prefer menus? Right-click and choose Convert with Filee.
Release the files over JPG. A progress ring counts up, and each JPG file is saved next to its original.
NEF files are too large and too unusual to send as they are. As JPG they become small, universally viewable photos; use JPG 70 % or a half-size preset for messaging apps. Nikon's NRW files from Coolpix cameras work the same way.

JPEG image
JPEG is the most widely used photo format. Its lossy compression keeps files small, but every save at lower quality discards some detail, and it has no transparency.
